FLaReNet Summary

The main academic activities on Language Resources and Technologies are conducted at Brno University of Technology (NLP and Speech Processing Groups at the Faculty of Information Technology and the Czech Technical University), at Charles University (CUNI) in Prague (Institute of Formal and Applied Linguistics, Institute of Czech National Corpus, Institute of Czech Language and Institute of Photonics and Electronics at the Czech Academy of Sciences), as well as at Masaryk University (in Brno, Centre for Natural Language Processing), the University of Western Bohemia (in Pilsen, Department of Cybernetics) and the Technical University of Liberec (Speech Lab). There exist several companies working in that field, mostly for Speech processing (Lingea, Phonexia, NovaSoft, Newton Media, SpeechTech, OptimSys, Fugasoft…).

Programs

The main activities are conducted at:

  - Brno University of Technology

      • The NLP Group is involved in several EU projects:
          o KiWi-Knowledge in Wiki (http://www.kiwi-project.eu);
          o WeKnowIt (http://www.weknowit.eu);
          o M-Eco (http://www.meco-project.eu).

      • The Speech Processing Group at the Faculty of Information Technology has been involved in several speech corpora collection projects. Main expertise of the group is in perceptually-based robust acoustic processing, speech recognition, keyword spotting and speaker and language identification.

      • The Czech Technical University conducts research on Speech Processing.

  - Charles University in Prague

      • The Institute of Formal and Applied Linguistics (http://ufal.mff.cuni.cz). The list of current research projects: http://ufal.mff.cuni.cz/research.html. The list of grants, that includes other projects: http://ufal.mff.cuni.cz/grants.html.

      • The Institute of Czech National Corpus (http://ucnk.ff.cuni.cz/english/) collects both Czech and parallel corpora. The list of available corpora with project descriptions is available at: http://ucnk.ff.cuni.cz/english/struktura.php.

      • The Institute of Theoretical and Computational Linguistics (http://utkl.ff.cuni.cz/en/) mostly works with the Institute of Czech National Corpus and the Institute of Formal and Applied Linguistics on the analysis of the corpora (see list of current research projects).

      • The Institute of Czech Language at the Academy of Science (http://www.ujc.cas.cz - in Czech only) cooperates with the above institutions on some projects. Mostly Masaryk University has recently cooperated with them on building lexical databases and dictionaries.

      • The Institute of Photonics and Electronics at the Czech Academy of Sciences conducts research on Speech Processing.

  - Masaryk University (in Brno)

      • Centre for Natural Language Processing. Although there is no list of projects at their website, some information can be gained from their list of publications.

  - University of Western Bohemia (in Pilsen)

      • The Department of Cybernetics has the Artificial Intelligence Section that does research in NLP, mostly in Speech recognition and synthesis, and multimodal data (audio-video, subtitling, sign language synthesis and translation, etc.).
