Programs

There is a very active community on speech and language processing in Egypt, with a strong involvement in the EC MEDAR project.

They have formed a new Association for Arabic Language Technologies (ALTEC, see Annex 5), which is nowadays working to develop some language resources for Arabic such as:

1. data for training and benchmarking for information retrieval both for web and enterprises;
2. OCR data base and benchmarking;
3. corpus for general use (raw and annotated);
4. a Machine Readable Dictionary MRD for Arabic.

First evaluation campaigns should start by the end of this year using such LRs.

ALTEC has been created and launched in the last quarter of 2009. Its aim is to serve the entire Arabic world, and those who like to deal or learn Arabic worldwide. The project has already obtained funding from the Egyptian government, but looks for other funding sources, including the EC FP7.
