5.3.11. Ethiopia

FLaReNet Summary

Currently only Addis Ababa University has a national program related to Language Resources and Language Technologies in Ethiopia. However, the activities are not organized in a way which would allow others to easily reuse the produced resources. Ethiopia being a multi-cultural language country hosts more than 72 languages, and the availability of Language Resources is a limiting factor for most of the researches undergoing in the University. Such activity therefore needs more emphasis in the future.

The Computer Science and Information Science Department conducts a large amount of research on language processing, including speech at masters level. Most of the research output is placed online for the public. Moreover, there is a young PhD program in IT which has one of its 6 tracks on Language Technologies (http://www.aau.edu.et/ITPhD/). This track is expected to participate in activities related to resource acquisition and related research. In addition to this, there are few attempts to develop POS-tagged and untagged corpus of Amharic Language (mainly on News).
