There is presently no National Program on HLT in Tunisia, while there was such a program in the 1980s at IRSIT (Institut de Recherche Scientifique et Technique), which developed several LT systems. There exist research activities on HLT in many Engineering schools.

Programs

There is presently no National Program on HLT in Tunisia. There was such a program in the 1980s at IRSIT (Institut de Recherche Scientifique et Technique, Contact: Prof. Salem Ghazali (Faculté des lettres de Tunis) and large projects on Machine Translation, Speech synthesis and document processing) have been conducted in this area within IRST for more than 20 Years.

The LSTS laboratory at ENIT (Ecole Nationale d’Ingénieurs de Tunis), attached to the Tunis Elmanar University, conducts research on Speech Synthesis and Recognition, and Document Processing/Character recognition since the 1980s (Contact: Prof. Noureddine Ellouze). ENIT also produced in cooperation with a German university a database of handwritten characters called ENIT FIN, which was used for international evaluation campaigns, and has an on-going scientific cooperation with a University in Saudi Arabia.

There are also research activities on Speech processing, Machine Translation and Character Recognition at ENSI in Sfax (Contacts: Prof. Ben Hamadou and Prof. Alimi) and on Character Recognition at ENISO in Sousse (Contact: Mrs Ben Amara).
