6.4.1. Japan

Apart from the GSK Language Resources Association, NICT launched two initiatives which have a transnational dimension:
   - the Language Grid provides services to the international community needing Language processing.
   - the ALAGIN (Advanced Language Information Forum), which aims at gathering and distributing to the Japanese R&D community the LR they need to develop technologies and applications.

In the area of evaluation, NII (the National Institute of Informatics) organizes the NTCIR Information Retrieval evaluation campaigns since 1999, which include two subtasks (Crosslingual Information Retrieval and Crosslanguage Question Answering) in 3 languages (Chinese, Japanese, Korean and English).
